About
A lifetime of practice. A patient, traditional approach.
Authentic Shotokan karate, taught one student at a time.
Val Kucherenko is a second-degree black belt (Nidan) in traditional Shotokan karate, rooted in the Shotokan Karate of America (SKA) tradition with international training experience across SKA and SKIF lineages. He now offers private and semi-private instruction from a focused training space in San Diego.
Instruction emphasizes proper fundamentals, awareness, discipline, and practical application at a pace appropriate to each student. Sessions are calm, structured, and oriented toward long-term personal development — confidence, body awareness, practical self-defense, and serious karate study.
Private instruction allows students to progress in a focused, distraction-free environment. Working with one student or a small group at a time leaves room for real correction, repetition, and the kind of attention that is impossible in a crowded room.
